History Astra trucks

The history of the automobile concern Astra begins in 1946, it was founded by Mario Bertuzzi. The very beautiful and understandable name “Astra” can be thought of as a flower, but in fact it is an abbreviation of the full name of the company producing heavy vehicles Anonima Sarda Trasporti. She started by converting army trucks into civilian ones. With the move to new workshops in Piacenza, Astra began to produce its own cars, building in 1955 the first Italian all-wheel drive dump truck "BM1" (4 × 4).

It was followed by the “BM2SA” dumper with a reversible helm station. In the 60s. the production of new 2- and 3-axle models "VM12", "VM16", "VM18" and "VM19" with a gross weight of 12-19 tons with a single or three-seater cab began. These cars were entirely equipped with foreign units, including Detroit Diesel 2-stroke 265 hp engines, Spicer or ZF gearboxes, Rockwell or Soma axles. In the 70s. "Astra" took up the creation of a unified series "20".

The basic ones were a 10-ton dump truck "VM20" (6 × 4), its all-wheel drive version "VM21" (6 × 6), an 8.5-ton dump truck "VM201" (4 × 4), equipped with Mercedes-Benz diesels ” (Mercedes-Benz) or FIAT (FIAT) with a capacity of 170-265 hp. At the same time, the company produced a 20-ton BM35 mining dump truck with an American V12 diesel engine (475 hp), as well as special low-frame chassis with a wheel arrangement of 8 × 4 and 10 × 6 and a gross weight of 50-80 tons. Since 1982, the production of a new 3-axle series “VM300” has begun. The base was a 24-ton dump truck "VM304" (6 × 4) with a gross weight of 33 tons with a body capacity of 14 m3 and an extended 2-seater tipping cab with specific vertical slots on the front cladding, which was developed by Ital Design.

On its basis, the BM305 dump truck with a single cab, the BM303 chassis for concrete mixers, the BM303 and BM309 all-wheel drive versions (6 × 6), as well as the BM305F truck (6 × 4) with a gross weight of 38 tons were produced. (carrying capacity 28.5 tons) for the transportation of particularly heavy indivisible goods. All cars used FIAT or Mercedes-Benz diesel engines with a capacity of 260-354 hp, mechanical 16-speed gearboxes ZF or 4-speed automatic Allison (Allison), differentials with electro-pneumatic lock. In general, Astra offered 50 variants of vehicles for performing particularly difficult work.

Since 1986 Astra has been a part of the concern (IVECO). This brought stability to her financial situation, but forced to reduce the program and abandon a number of original models. Since 1988, a 25-ton mining dump truck “VM501” has been produced with a 14-liter FIAT engine of 304 hp. and a 5-speed Allison gearbox. In 1989, the production of a unified family of all-terrain vehicles "6000" began. The new range includes 10 basic variants of 3-axle chassis (models from “64.26” to “66.52”), for which 6 and 8-cylinder IVECO diesel engines with a capacity of 260-514 hp are used.

They serve as the basis for dump trucks and trucks with a payload of 22-28.5 tons, truck tractors for work as part of road trains with a gross weight of 75-100 tons, 18 cubic meters of concrete mixers with a single cab. Developed in the 90s. the new 4-axle “8000” series includes two 30-ton 420-horsepower dump trucks “84.42” and “84.52” (8×4) with a 420 hp diesel engine. and one special 17.5-ton army chassis “88.42” (8 × 8) with a gross weight of 32 tons, equipped with an automatic 6-speed gearbox. In addition, Astra supplies a series of special dump trucks from the compact underground “RD14” (4 × 4) with a reversible control post to the 500-horsepower mining vehicle “RD40”, as well as crane chassis. In 1999, the company employed 480 people who manufactured 1,300 chassis.
