History BharatBenz

Daimler's Indian branch, BharatBenz, recently celebrated its anniversary, with 100,000 trucks assembled there since production began in 2012.

BharatBenz owes its birth to Mercedes and the local company Tata. Back in 1954, the latter bought a license for medium-class trucks with a gross weight of five to seven tons, and in return Germany received part of the company's shares. At first, car kits came directly from Indy, and by 1970 they had localized production by 90%. Considering that Tata was the largest engineering concern, producing almost everything from bicycles to steam locomotives, this was not difficult.

Further, the situation escalated: Germany insisted on updating the program. But since they only had an 11% stake in Tata, there was no leverage. And Tata saw no reason to upgrade, continuing to assemble machines of a simplified design. Given the poverty of the country, such a strategy justified itself.

Not finding understanding among the partners, the Germans sold their shares and opened their own plant, where they launched the production of Actros and Axor models. The word Bharat, by the way, means the self-name of India in Hindi.

The cars themselves are a kind of mix based on the Mercedes Axor and Mitsubishi Fuso, simplified and adapted. Small cabins, low-power diesel engines, leaf spring suspension and a minimum of electronics. Later, buses and agricultural trailers were added to the program.

And in eight years, Bharat has amassed a hundred thousand trucks of all classes. It's funny that Tata collects the same amount, but every year.
