The History of Mack Trucks

The auto concern, founded more than a hundred years ago by the brothers Mack, is a tradition of impeccable quality. The Mack Truck legend of the car market is the world-famous model of the AC truck, named "Bulldog" for its characteristic design and unique performance characteristics.

MACK TRUCK is a factory known all over the world. This is a manufacturer of not only tractors, but also one of the leading manufacturers of high-quality powerful engines that are supplied not only to cars of our own production, but also to other American and European tractors.

Mack medium and heavy trucks are known not only in the USA, but also outside the Americas. Founded in 1900, the company acquired its current name - Mack Trucks inc. – only in 1922. Since 2000, the company has been part of the Volvo Group and is one of the largest truck manufacturers in North America. Head office of Mack Trucks inc. located in Greensboro, NC, the same location as Volvo Trucks North America, and almost all MACK on-highway trucks are assembled in Macungie, PA. But all this is today, and more than 100 years ago ...

Of course, the history of any company contains many myths and beautiful legends that are difficult to confirm or refute. But it is all the more interesting to learn another success story, especially since one of the leaders in the American market of highway and heavy trucks Mack Trucks inc. started his story with... No, not from the creation, but from the purchase of a company that produces carriages and vans. John M. "Jack" Mack got a job there in 1890. It was located in Brooklyn, then still a city, and not in the Greater New York area. Seeing the success of this case, John Mack persuaded his brother Augustus (Augustus F. Mack) to buy the company, and a year later he invited another brother, William (William C. Mack), who ran a wagon company in Pennsylvania, to join them. So the Mack brothers took up the production of wagons, while experimenting with steam and electric engines. This "hobby" has borne fruit and already from the second Mack motor vehicle, the brothers begin to understand how important it is to integrate the transmission and engine as much as possible, to make them work as efficiently as possible.

In 1900, the first Mack appears - a 20-seat motorized "carriage" designed to tour Prospect Park in Brooklyn. The Mack bus was equipped with a 40 hp engine. and, due to its reliability, allowed to recoup the investment in less than a year. The success was so great that the brothers decided to introduce similar technologies in cargo transportation, while not forgetting about the production of buses, which, by the way, MACK was engaged in until 1960. And for many years the main slogan of this company was the slogan "The first Mack was a bus and the first bus was a Mack".

The beginning of the 20th century was marked by many discoveries and inventions. The Mack brothers also contributed to this. One of the inventions of John Mack was a device that allows you to shift gears from low to high and vice versa bypassing intermediate positions. This invention allowed additional funds to be raised, as other engine manufacturers willingly bought licenses to be able to install it on their cars. With this success, John, August and William, along with another brother, Gus Mack, formed the Mack Brothers Motor Car Company in Pennsylvania.

Looking at the powerful nosed American trucks, it's hard to imagine that Mack was one of the first truck manufacturers to install cabs over the engine, because. used cabover solutions for their trucks. This solution gave better visibility and maneuverability on crowded city streets, and in 1905, the five-ton motorized Manhattan trucks appeared, with a seat above the engine. Manhattan was based on a platform from the already proven first Mack bus, which became known as Old No 1.

Mack Trucks celebrated the new century and centenary with the release of a new line of Granit trucks designed for the construction industry and ... a change of ownership - the company, together with the parent Renault Trucks, was bought by the Volvo Group. In order to increase competitiveness, restructurings have begun in both companies. Although the Volvo Group is headquartered in Sweden, the company has operations and manufacturing facilities in the US. This allowed for closer integration. So the production of the CH and Vision models was moved to the Volvo plant in Virginia, and then to the Mack plant in Macung, Pennsylvania, where the entire line of Mack Trucks trucks has been assembled since 2009.
